Arsenal told to sack Unai Emery and replace him with current Premier League manager

Arsenal should consider Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder as a replacement for under-fire Unai Emery, claims Paul Merson.

Emery has come under intense scrutiny following a miserable start to the Premier League that has seen the Gunners slump to sixth place with just two wins in their last 10 Premier League matches.

A section of the fans have demanded the Spaniard’s dismissal but the board appears to be backing him at least until the summer when his future will be determined.

Merson, though, believes that his former club should seriously consider replacing the ex-Paris Saint-Germain boss with Wilder who has done a remarkable job with Sheffield United.

The Blades are fifth in the Premier League table with four wins and only three losses in the first 12 games of the campaign.

Sheffield United also hold the second best record of goals conceded, behind Leicester, and have proven to be a pleasant surprise in the league this season.

Merson believes Wilder should be considered as a serious prospect thanks to impressive work at Oxford United and Northampton earlier in his career.

The footballer-turned-pundit added that the Blades are also playing some “lovely” football that led to them dominating Arsenal with a 1-0 victory at Bramall Lane in October.

Merson told the Daily Star : "Chris Wilder has done a fantastic job at Sheffield United and deserves a crack at a really big job at some point.

"We should all be talking about him right now but we’re not. Maybe his name’s too English? But look at what he’s achieved.

"He was successful at Oxford and Northampton. Two tough jobs. And he’s taken Sheffield United back into the Premier League.

"They are not keeping all those clean sheets by sticking ten men behind the ball either.

“They play some lovely stuff, get people in the box, and have a go at teams.

"I think they have actually been a bit unlucky in some games this season but to see them up there in fifth is phenomenal.

"I watched them play Arsenal and there was only one team who knew what they were doing. Arsenal had no idea. That’s good coaching.

"Managers like Unai Emery and Manuel Pellegrini are under pressure, and okay you never know for sure if a manager can make such a big step up.

"But Chris Wilder has got to be in the conversation the next time a big job comes up. He deserves it."
