Manchester United were in need of a savior before Bruno Fernandes strolled through the door at Old Trafford in January.

The Red Devils looked as likely to finish in the bottom half of the table as they did to qualify for the Champions League.





But prior to the Premier League season being suspended, United were enjoying a sensational run of form in which they had won seven of their last 10 in all competitions.

Fernandes has been credited for influencing the upsurge in results, with the squad more connected since the Portugal international entered the dressing room.


So what is it about Fernandes that has inspired United?

Back when Fernandes was at Sporting Lisbon, a WhatsApp voice note in which he slammed his team-mates for poor performances was leaked.

Fernandes is quoted as saying, per Portuguese publication Record: "Bro, I don't say anything! I honestly, if you want me to tell you, I'd rather not comment on anything.

"I think very badly of some of the attitude of some players. Actually not a certain attitude, it's an attitude that does not exist.

"There are players who have no attitude here, bro. They don't want to be here, they don't want to play.

Fernandes wasn't one to hold his tongue at Sporting Lisbon


"They don't want to be here then f*** off, let them say they don't want to play. They spend a year here getting money, and then they f*** off, bro. S*** attitude bro, for f**** sake."

Fernandes also hit out at the media, and stuck up for the Sporting fans who were protesting against the club in 2018.

"They are focused on talking badly about players and giving news that only causes confusion and s***," said Fernandes.

"Just yesterday 'invasion of supporters'. What invasion? They went there to complain, it's their right! They went there to sing and send some words.

"What do we want? We don't beat anyone and we want what? Applause in all games? That's all I needed, bro! Come and cheer us always!

According to the Daily Mail, Fernandes didn't hide away and shirk responsibility when the WhatsApp voice note came to light. The Portuguese instead stood by what he said.

Fernandes concluded the chat by putting his finger to his lips.

The midfielder was asked about the spat following the fixture, and many presumably expected him to bow down and 'show respect' to Guardiola.

But once again the 25-year-old showed his mettle. He stuck to his guns and defended himself and Manchester United.

He told the press: "Some people think like, 'Pep won everything, who is Bruno to do this to him?' But I think it's about respect. Now, outside of the pitch, calm, I don't do this again if I'm on the pitch now.




The Portugal international has been a breath of fresh air for United



"But at that moment, the words he told me made me mad and on the pitch I'm a little bit nervous. It's the kind of player I am."

Of course, being full-blooded in arguments doesn't make you the saviour of a club.

But it does say a lot about the individual's character - and being assertive is a personality trait Manchester United had in abundance during the Sir Alex Ferguson reign, but have been lacking of late.
