5 Animals That Can Freeze For More Than One Week And Still Come Back To Life

Is it true that after death, an animal comes to life again? Response is yes.

1. Wood frog



There are a number of animals with that special ability. One of them is the, Rana sylvatica, a wood-frog species whose peculiar abilities boggle scientists' minds.

With an astounding two-thirds of their body water fully frozen, the tiny amphibians can live for weeks, to the point that they are practically solid frogsicles.

The fact that the wood frogs stop breathing is even more unbelievable, and their hearts stop beating for days to weeks at a time.



Indeed, during its frozen winter hibernation, the physical processes of the frog vary from metabolic activity to the grinding of waste production to a near halt. And still, spring has come, frogs are thawing out and hoping right into life.

This amazing case of cryogenics is possible thanks to several special adaptations, including the special role of antifreeze which glucose plays in the body of the frog.

2. Tardigrades or water Bears





Tardigrades are tiny water-dwelling extremophiles able to withstand some of the most severe environmental conditions, including freezing, total dehydration, radiation and even space vacuum.

Much of this is related to their extraordinary genome, almost 18 percent of which consists of DNA from other organisms , including plants, fungi, bacteria and viruses.






When frozen, tardigrades enter a state called cryptobiosis, where their metabolic activity is shut down or halted for an extended time span.

An organism does not display any visible signs of life during this period.

Scientists have documented several different cryptobiosis strategies in animals, including desiccation; extreme dryness, osmotic pressure that allows organisms to tolerate shifting environmental variations, including salinity, oxygen deficiency; animals can slow or stop metabolic processes by slowing down breathing and of course, freezing.






On march 2014, a group of scientist were able to revive 1983 egg and one out of two tardigrades that was frozen for 30 years.

3. Alligators






In water as cold as 4 degrees Celsius, animals can survive and enter a hibernation-like state to keep their bodies warm and conserve energy.

The park described how the alligators survive the cold, writing, Alligators are going to get into a state of brummation, where the metabolism of a reptile slows down dramatically and becomes lethargic.






An alligator will often stay at the bottom of a body of water during this time. An alligator can hold its breath 1 to 24 hours underwater. When they need to breathe, they can then gradually surface and point their nostrils at the water's tip.






The creatures keep their stationary bodies suspended in the mud, while pointing their nostrils upwards.

When it gets particularly cold, alligators burrow for extra warmth deep into mud holes at the water banks.

4. Darkling Bettle






In midwinter, temperatures that drop to -76 degrees F (-60 degrees C) at the home of an Alaskan dark beetle, but this beetle species is able to keep its internal, watery cell contents from catastrophically freezing.






A sugar-based polymer developed by an Alaskan dark beetle prevents cell contents from freezing by binding them to the cell membrane at extreme cold temperatures.






Alaskan beetle produces an antifreeze based on sugar called xylomannan (a polymer in which xylose and mannose sugars alternate).

Through other oily compounds, xylomannan binds to the outer cell membrane where it potentially acts to prevent extracellular ice from entering the cell, to avoid ice from forming within the cell, and to facilitate membrane stability.

5. Iguanas

They are cold blooded reptiles that live mostly on trees.




Once temperatures drop to about four degrees Celcius, iguanas can freeze. But as temperatures drop, they slow down, gradually becoming immobile and losing their hold on the trees in which they live-which means they only fall down! But do not worry, they are not dead.
