NOTE: Make Sure You Ask For 8 Documents Before You Buy A Used Car

Are you planning to buy a used car or you have already met a good bargain and you about making payments, please take a brief break and read this very important information.

It is always a thing of joy when after a very long period of hustling, the pay finally arrived for you to fulfill your dream of becoming a car owner. It is a dream that every hard-working hustler desire to accomplish. But before you get carried away with the excitement of buying a new car you need to understand that buying a used car is not as easy as you think and if you are not careful enough you might end up losing your hard-earned money to fraudsters.

Some of the cars you see on some of the online stores and even on the street are not what you should buy because they are either stolen, smuggled, or cloned cars. In view of this, I have decided to assist you to in order to ensure the car you are buying does not have a big question mark.

Before you buy any used car in Nigeria make sure you ask for these eight documents as highlighted below:

1. Fully stamped Custom documents and check to find out if all things correspond, like name and model of car, vehicle identification number (VIN), or chassis number.

Ensure that the VIN on the paper is the same with that on the vehicle and also check if all the necessary payments were made. Some of the custom documents might be photocopies and that is if multiple cars were cleared by one dealer. However, make sure they are all clear crisp documents not faded crap.Sample of one of the custom document

2. Computerized motor registration (CMR) original copy. Don't allow anyone to deceive you.

3. Current insurance document and it must be the original copy.

4. Original copy of Vehicle license.

5. Roadworthiness certificate (original copy).

6. Plate number allocation (original copy).

7. Original proof of ownership fully stamped. Don't be deceived.

8. In addition to the documents listed above, you will also collect two printed and fully signed documents. They are:

i. Change of ownership document. Note, you also need to verify the previous change of ownership document between the current seller and the person he bought the vehicle from except he bought it new or tokunbo.

ii. Receipt of purchase from the previous owner. If the car you are buying is a tinted car don't forget to ask for the tinted permit document.

Final note

Be vigilant around vehicles with no custom document. It is much safer to stay away from it. If the seller acquired this vehicle as a Nigerian used, a signed change of ownership document should be given to you by him or her. You might not really need this if the seller bought the vehicle as direct tokunbo. Acquiring these documents will save you from stress or unnecessary embarrassment with the concerned agency while driving.
