Self Certification Form: FIRS Reveals Who Qualifies to Obtain the Form

On Thursday, there was an uproar from Nigerians about the the announcement by the Federal Government of Nigeria that all account holders should obtain, complete and submit Self-Certification Forms to their Banks and other financial institutions





On Friday, the Federal Inland Revenue Service made a clarification and explained who should actually get the Self-Certification Form.


The FIRS said the form is in line with the Income Tax Regulations of 2019 and which is for the fulfilment of Automatic Exchange of Information Requirements






The FIRS said it is only for those who they described as Reportable Persons who have accounts with Nigerian financial institutions. The Service said that Reportable Persons are often non-residents and those who pay in more than one country

Financial institutions will give the form to such persons who are residents for tax purposes in more than one country or jurisdiction.

The FIRS said that the Financial Institutions will know who qualifies to be in this category based on the information they submitted when opening the accounts for KYC and AML purpose
