The Federal Government has disclosed that it's going to review the date (18 January) set for the reopening of schools because of the second wave of the Covid-19.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu said this in response to a question thrown at him during the weekly press briefing by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 at Abuja.

He said that the decision was made in light of the second wave of Covid-19 that is affecting the country.


"The January 18 date of school reopening is not sacrosanct. When we decide on that date, it's just like a target that we are working on. We still hold on to the date, while we check the situation of things going on in the country and the decision is subject to review", he explained

He further said, "Even today (Monday) at the PTF meeting, we looked at the number of covid cases that has gone up and we thought it wise to take another look at the January 18 resumption. We will review it, we have to and the ministry will take it up on Tuesday".

Following this disclosure, Nigerians have taken to the microblogging platform, Twitter to express their reactions as many reacted negatively to the decision of the Federal Government.

Some are displeased that the educational system of Nigeria and it's leadership does not have the students at heart, and so keep on toiling with their future.

It's up to a year now since the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU body and the Federal Government kept the students of the public universities at home, following the industrial action embarked upon by the ASUU body, demanding that their allowances, salaries and revitalization funds to be paid before they will resume back to work and reopen the schools.

Several meetings and arguments ensued between the ASUU body and the Federal Government before finally reaching an agreement. The Federal Government has paid part of the money agreed upon, and promised to pay up the remaining soon. The ASUU body however, disclosed that if the Federal Government does not pay the remaining by the ending of January, then they will go on another strike.

Why I had to bring up this is just to refresh your memory of what actually led to the strike. Now, the students and some schools are set to resume and go back to their lecture halls. Schools like the University of Lagos, University of Port Harcourt, University of Benin and several schools have already brought out their resumption date and calendar for the semester.

Some private schools and Polytechnics are currently learning and carrying out other school activities. Markets are open, bars, banks, religious bodies, etc are all functioning and applying the Covid-19 protocol put in place by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.

While then is the ASUU and Federal Government going back and forth when it comes to reopening of these schools?. Can this protocol not be applied to these schools?. Days are counting and before we will know what's happening, the month will come to an end, then we may see another strike if the Federal Government does not pay up the remaining amount. This same Federal Government that has postpone the reopening of schools.
