"Why I spent eight years at Arsenal, but couldn't save £100,000 in my account " - Ex Barcelona star

Arsenal midfielder Alexander Song has disclosed that he wasted almost all his earnings at the London club on luxurious lifestyle.

The Former Cameroonian defensive midfielder said he only earn 15000 pounds in his first four years at Arsenal, but wanted to live large like Thierry Henry who was the club's captain and highest earner at the time.

Song joined Arsenal in 2005 on initial loan deal from French side Bastia, after impressive performance Arsene Wenger decided to make his stay permanent at the London club.





However song went on to spent eight years before joining Catalonia giants Barcelona and it happened to be the moves that ruined his promising career.

In a live chat with his followers on Instagram video, Alex Song explained that transpired in his career :

"I spent eight years at Arsenal, but it wasn't until my last four that I can say that I started earning a very good living because my salary increased considerably, wasted a lot of money, I was going to expensive dinners, trips and holidays. During those eight years, I couldn't even keep £100,000 in my bank account. I thought I was a millionaire but that was not the reality, I was making £15,000 per week. I came to training, saw Henry arrived in his car, I thought I need the same no matter cost because I was a footballer, go to dealer, signed some papers and ended up with the same car as Henry, but I understood that my money was going to run out and I asked for a Toyota instead."

Song later returned to Arsenal in 2018 , but not as their player, he was only allowed to train with them after being released by Russian side Rubin Kazan.

Song later signed with Swiss Super League Side Sion on a free transfer on 14 August 2018, but In March 2020, Song was one of nine players sacked by Sion for refusing to take a pay cut during the coronavirus pandemic.
