Bank Staff Explains Why They are Debiting, Customers React on Twitter with Funny memes Reactions.

The recent Access Bank mass debiting of accounts for stamp duty seems to have sparked angry conversations in many quarters. Many Access Bank customers were taken unawares including me. However, Daniel Izuchukwu, a staff of Access Bank used his Facebook platform to clarify customers on the situation.

"ON THE RECENT STAMP DUTY DEDUCTION ON ACCESS ACCOUNTS

Hey Guys,

So I have been made aware that Access Bank is trending (yet again) as regards the deduction on accounts for stamp duty charges.

On the 20th of June, 2020 a memo was sent to all customers (except of course you do not get emails from the bank or you get but do not bother to read) in respect to this. I'm very keen to believe it's very likely the latter here but that's fine. Thing is, that memo would have helped with the shock response to the (rather sudden) deduction which is more the reason for the agitation than the deduction itself but that's fine.

The Postage Stamp Duty charge for those who do not know is a levy on every ten thousand naira (#10000) deposit and above, whether through electronic transfers or cash, into accounts FROM A THIRD PARTY.

In other words, if you receive an inflow of that range of amount from someone who isn't signatory to your account, you'll be charged fifty naira #50 which is the actual amount. It is pertinent to note here that this is a recent development as I'm sure we're all aware.

Now, CBN gave another directive (which is the pivot of that memo sent exactly one week before the deduction) to remit all charges done on accounts from FEBRUARY till APRIL. This would mean that if you have gotten an inflow 8 times within the context of the amount aforementioned, you'll be charged #400 and so on. Note that these deductions are going straight to CBN!

For those who were charged #1000, you had such deposits 20 times. So you know how much you were charged, you can now do the math.

Honestly, the bank regrets this inconvenience caused but had we all seen that memo, the agitation won't be this much.

Anyway, this is me wanting to spare all of you, my friends, the trauma of having to go to the nearest branch, queue for hours to cause wahala. I mean, why the stress?"
