Chelsea ace breaks finger in training ahead of Premier League restart

Chelsea ace Andreas Christensen broke his finger in training earlier this month, but will still be fit for this weekend's game against Aston Villa.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen broke his finger in training and required surgery to insert splints into it, according to The Athletic. The Blues ace is still expected to be included in Frank Lampard's first-team squad for Sunday's game against Aston Villa.


Chelsea's preparations for the return of the Premier League took a small hit this week, after it emerged the centre-back had broken his finger in training.

Christensen apparently had to have surgery to have splints inserted into his finger after breaking it.

However, he is still set to return to the fold once play resumes this weekend.


Chelsea are in a tough fight for the Champions League qualification spots, and will need all their players fit for action ahead of this weekend's trip to Villa Park.

The coronavirus break allowed Chelsea time to get some of their first-team players back from injury, and Lampard will now have almost a full squad to choose from.

N'Golo Kante, Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek will all be ready to return once the season resumes, having sat out periods prior to the pandemic through various injuries.

Loftus-Cheek in particular appears to be back to full fitness, having scored twice in Chelsea's 7-1 rout over Queens Park Rangers over the weekend.

Kante also played in that fixture, having returned to training after the rest of the group due to health and safety fears.


The Blues are in a stiff battle to qualify for the Champions League next season, with Manchester United breathing down their necks in the table.

United face Tottenham on Friday night and can leapfrog Chelsea with a win, with Lampard's side not in action until Sunday.

And Jamie Redknapp believes Chelsea should be worried about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad, with Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba set to return from injuries.

"If you look at Manchester United right now, they’ve got a young man in Marcus Rashford who is now fit for his team. That’s going to be amazing to have him back for United.

"It’s like a brand new signing – one of the best centre forwards in the world or wide players, wherever you want to play him.

"So I think United will look at that and think “we’ve got a real chance”.

"It will be interesting to see the dynamic in midfield, too, with Paul Pogba coming back as well. There’s so much talent in that area now and if you can get that midfield working together then you’ve got a really big chance.

"Teams will be nervous about United. The likes of Chelsea that are already in the top four will be looking over their shoulder."
