Child Traffickers Nabbed Trying To Sell Day-Old-Baby In Aba

Two persons, Michael Okeke, m, 37-years-old, and Amarachi Uche, f, 35-years-old, have been arrested for allegedly trying to sell a day-old-baby girl in Abia State.

THE News man gathered that they were arrested at the Aba Park on June 1, 2020, when negotiating the sale of the baby girl at the sum of N8, 000, 000. 00 with a prospective buyer in Umuahia.

Confirming the incident to our correspondent in Umuahi, Saturday, the public relations officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abia State Command, DSC Ndukwe Agu Egwu, said the undercover officers of the corps swooped on the suspects through intelligence reports.

According to him, “Operatives of the NSCDC, Abia State Command, Umuahia, at about 0915hrs on Monday, 1st June, 2020 arrested two suspected child traffickers at Aba, Abia State. The suspects were arrested while negotiating the price of a day-old-baby girl at the Aba Park following a tip-off from one of our undercover operatives posted to the busy popular Aba Motor Park. The operatives overhead their phone conversation with a lady in Umuahia for a sum of N8m only, to part with the innocent baby.”


He said preliminary investigations conducted by the corps showed that the female child was born in a ‘baby factory’ located in Aba on Sunday, 31st May, 2020 by a yet-to-be-apprehended mother, adding that the arrested suspects were saddled with negotiating for customers and general sales for the ‘baby factory’.

He added that, “We later found out that the baby has not been vaccinated with BCG vaccine for new born as at the time of this arrest due to the urgent arrangements to sell her. However, the medical unit of the command made the necessary arrangements with the nearest government hospital for all the required medical attention. The matter has been handed over to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Abia State chapter, for prosecution.”
