Top 8 Worst Goalkeepers Ever In English Premier League History

The Premier League has also had its fair share of keepers who have been the exact opposite.One tends to forget those who were not so good and who have given football fans some funny moments season after season and endured a torrid time in between the sticks.


1. Peter Enckelman







The Finnish goalkeeper arrived at Aston Villa in 1999 and largely played a back-up role to David James and Peter Schmeichel in his first seasons at the club, before being handed the role of first-choice following the latter’s departure in 2002.In one of his first starts for the club he would write himself into folklore, though sadly for Enckelman, it would be for all of the wrong reasons.

A fiercely contested derby with city rivals Birmingham would see Enckelman make an infamous mistake, taking his eye off a throw-in from Olof Mellberg to allow the ball to squirm under his foot for an own goal. It was a catastrophic mistake and one the shot-stopper would never truly recover from, despite making 52 appearances for the club before moving to Blackburn Rovers the following year.

2. Massimo Taibi






Probably the most famous terrible goalkeeper in Premier League history. If you play for one of the biggest club's in the world, your mistakes are always going to be under the microscope, especially if you're a goalkeeper, when your mistakes normally lead to conceding a goal. Taibi arrived at Old Trafford from Venezia with the tough task of replacing Peter Schmeichel.

He won the man of the match award on his debut, but never looked comfortable. After a horrific mistake against Southampton and conceding five against Chelsea, Fergie had seen enough, and the 'Blind Venetian' was sent packing.

3. Steve Mandanda






Steve the Man Panda was done dirty at Crystal Palace. The France international (France international!) had missed four Ligue 1 games across the last eight seasons for Marseille before Crystal Palace swooped in to get a replacement for the 'shoot below his knees and you'll score' stylings of Wayne Hennessey.

He played nine Premier League games in a row, kept no clean sheets, conceded 17 goals and...never played another Premier League game. All of this after keeping a clean sheet on debut against Blackpool in the League Cup.

He got binned off at the end of the season, back to Marseille where he immediately became their number one option. No player in Europe's top five leagues played a higher percentage of their team's minutes across the 2010s than Mandanda at Marseille. And he was gone for a year!

4. Adam Bogdan






Most of the goalkeepers on this list gained infamy for their appearances for a single Premier League club, but Hungary’s Adam Bogdan was terrible for two sides. After making a handful of appearances for Bolton Wanderers after signing for them in the summer of 2007, Bogdan took over as the Trotters’ #1 for a couple of stretches in 2011/12 when Jussi Jaaskelainen suffered some injuries.

He subsequently let in 5 goals against Chelsea, and even conceded a 102-yard goal from opposing keeper Tim Howard during a game against Everton, ending the season with 20 Premier League appearances as Bolton were relegated.The following seasons saw him lose his place at the Reebok Stadium – making it truly baffling when Brendan Rodgers brought him to Liverpool in the summer of 2015 as a backup to Simon Mignolet.

The Hungarian made his Liverpool debut in the EFL Cup a few months later, but his Premier League debut, in a match against Watford, was saved until after Rodgers had been fired and replaced by Jurgen Klopp. And to say it was shockingly bad would be an understatement; Bogdan dropped a corner after just 3 minutes to allow Nathan Ake to score, and had an absolute stinker as the Hornets ran out 3-0 winners.

Bogdan only played in one more Premier League game for Liverpool – but added more notoriety to his name when he conceded direct from a corner in an FA Cup game against Exeter City. Unsurprisingly, he was jettisoned to Wigan Athletic in the summer of2016.

5. Loris Karius- Liverpool






Liverpool had no option but to pay a record £67 million to sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma. The Reds needed safe hands between the posts starting from next season for them to stand a chance of winning a major trophy.

We all remember UEFA Champions League final in May this year. The Premier League side lost the game 3-1 to Real Madrid but they got two easy goals from goalkeeper Loris Karius. He started by throwing the ball hurriedly towards Karim Benzema who kicked it towards the net for 1-0. Sadio Made equalized to keep the game alive.

Gareth Bale scored a great goal in second half to make it 2-1. The Merseyside giant was fighting to get back level but another silly mistake by Karius gave Bale a chance to score the third. The game was dead and buried by the goalkeeper mistakes. He has continued to make mistakes in recent weeks which is a clear indication that his career is in serious trouble.

6. Ricardo-Manchester United






If Massimo Taibi was bad, Ricardo was far much worse than that, maybe terrible. Fergie was unlucky again. The Shot stopper had arrived from La Liga to cover Carroll and Barthez but he actually never achieved any of that.

The Red Devils had paid $2.5 million for his services but even though it doesn’t sound much, it was like throwing money out of the window. He made only 1 appearance and gave away a penalty in only 10 minutes of that game. He was sent packing almost immediately. If possible United would prefer to erase his name in their history.

7. Andy Dibble






With a long career in football, Dibble started his career as a left back and many pundits think he should have never changed his role to goalkeeping.Dibble was a complete failure between the poles.

His lack of quality turned him into a second choice keeper in favour of the oldest goalkeeper ever to have played in EPL, 43-year-old John Burridge, while at Manchester City.In 1998 he was given the chance to resurrect his career by Middlesbrough.

He played two games. He conceded 11 goals. His next two clubs were Barry Town and Altrincham.Dibble’s long career was also marked by enormous howlers and bench-warming matches.

8. Claudio Bravo






Pep Guardiola raided Barcelona to improve his goalkeeping options over the summer. Unfortunately for Manchester City, he came back with Claudio Bravo and not Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The 33-year-old Chilean has been routinely exposed at the back during his short time in England and has kept just two clean sheets in 12 league starts this term, a hugely disappointing return for a goalkeeper in a title-challenging team.

Having claimed just 0.5 crosses per league game, Bravo’s indecision and poor command of his area has been exploited by opponents in the Premier League.
