Wednesday provides Manchester United with the perfect chance to bounce back to winning ways and enhance their top-four odds when they play host to West Ham at Old Trafford.


Ole Gunnar Solskjær chose to rest a host of his stars for Sunday’s disappointing 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea but expect him to go with the big boys as they get back on home turf.

The Hammers are more or less safe as they sit six points above the relegation zone but will be desperate to bolster their Premier League survival bid with a win against United.


Perhaps Wembley was the result of a run of games for the Red Devils in which while they have been successful, going 19 unbeaten in all competitions, they have failed to rotate adequately.

Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood were all left out against the Blues but the trio should return here and they may feel they have a point to prove as they look to extend their side’s run to seven unbeaten on their own patch.

France international Martial is certainly one to watch, having netted six goals in seven outings against the Hammers, and is 11/4 with bet365 to break the deadlock.

Unlike a number of teams, United still have plenty to play for, with a win or a draw in this game in hand guaranteed to take them into the top four ahead of Sunday’s trip to Leicester City, the team they could replace in the Champions League spots.

The Red Devils are also looking to build momentum before the return of the Europa League next month and it is difficult to see them losing out to a club that have not won at Old Trafford since the final day of the 2006-07 season.

That being said, the Hammers have a knack of making life tough for the Red Devils. They have triumphed by two clear goals on the last two occasions that the pair have met in east London.

They can also play with freedom after Friday’s 3-1 win over Watford realistically sealed their safety, and their survival status could be confirmed if results on Tuesday go their way.

Even so, a win or a draw at Old Trafford would do the work for them and they might well be good for at least a goal on Wednesday, having netted seven times in their last two games.

Five of those have come from Michail Antonio who continues to inspire those around him and famously scored when the Hammers won 3-2 in the final game at Upton Park in May 2016.

While David Moyes may be looking to avoid any embarrassment on his return to Old Trafford, Antonio’s form means the Londoners will carry a threat however they set up.

As a result, there could be goals at both ends in this game. United showed themselves to be vulnerable in Sunday’s 3-1 FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea and that will not have gone unnoticed.

West Ham’s tally of 60 conceded this season is the fourth worst in the Premier League, while United have let in two goals in both of their previous two home games, so neither defence convinces.
