Liverpool finally banished their demon of 30years when they lifted the Premier league trophy after the match against Chelsea at Anfield on 22nd of July 2020. In 1990 when they last won the league title, Liverpool fans would have called you deranged if you had mentioned that their beloved club will have to wait for another 30years to be crowned champions of the English premier league again. In fact, they would have stated unequivocally that they will retain the league, after all that team which was led by the legendary Kenny Daglish had won the league title in 1988 and only lost the 1989 league title to Arsenal on goal scored, although they had the same points and goal difference. They came back stronger for the 1989/90 season to win the league for the 18th time in their history. They would however have to wait for another 30years to taste league triumph again. Within that 30-year wait, liverpool faced various challenges both on and off the pitch. Off the pitch, they were on the verge of bankruptcy in 2010 before John W. Henry who also owns Boston Red Sox and Fenway Sports Group took ownership of the club. On the pitch, legendary manager Kenny Daglish resigned a year after leading the team to their 18th league title citing the Hillsborough disaster and its repercussions as the reason for his resignation.






Liverpool's fortune in the league never remained the same thereafter. When it had looked like they were finally going to end their wait, it was either a slip from their beloved legendary captain Steven Gerrard or a collapse at Crystal Palace that ended such hope. For some unknown reason, they couldn't reach the finish line in the league until 2019/20 when they "blew" everyone in the league away. In fact, at some point in the 2019/20 season, it looked like they were going to be the second "invisibles"(unbeaten in the league for the season) until watford dented such hope. 30years after their last league triumph, liverpool fans can lay claim to being the league champions again. When they won the Champions league in 2019 after a 14year wait, there were allegedly over 750,000 Liverpool fans on the streets celebrating with their team's success, what number will be celebrating this league triumph when the social distancing rule is lifted is yet to be known.







Below is a list of some of the top clubs who experienced league drought like Liverpool.

1. Manchester United (41 years drought).






Although Manchester United have won the league title more than any other English club, there were some periods in their history where they experienced league droughts. The 20 time English Premier League champions had a 41 years league drought. Yes 41 years, between 1911 to 1952.

2. Manchester City(44years drought).






Today's Manchester City is dissimilar to yesterday's in quality and competitiveness. There is hardly any premier league campaign in the past ten(10) seasons that they have not competed for. In fact, they have won four(4) of the last ten (10) premier league campaign, only Chelsea and Manchester United have won it more than once in the past ten(10) years. However, prior to this period, they had league droughts too. They had a 44year drought between 1968 to 2012.

3. Chelsea (50 years drought).






Chelsea is an example of how quickly things change in football. Prior to the purchase of the club by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, the club had only won the league once, the 1954-1955 season. They had to wait for another 50years before celebrating another league triumph which came a year after Roman Abramovich took over the club. Between the 1954/55 season to 2004/2005 season, there were 50years of league drought at Chelsea. Since Abrahamovic took over, they have now won five(5) league titles compared to just one(1) league triumph before him.

4. Barcelona( 16years Drought).






Barcelona is Spain's most successful club if you consider the total trophy won by each club in Spain. In fact, when the Spanish La liga was established in 1929, Barcelona were the inaugural winner of the trophy. However, it took another 16years before they could lay their hands on the trophy again. They eventually ended their 16year drought when they won the league again in the 1945 season although there was a 3year break in the league in that period because of the Spanish civil war.

5. Real Madrid (21years Drought).






Real Madrid are the most successful club in the history of Europe's premier club competition, the Uefa Champions League(13) and have won the Spanish La liga more than any other club(34). As the capital club in Spain, they are always viewed as a "state sponsored" club because of their affiliation with Spanish Dictator, Franco. However, they also had their own period of drought which spanned 21years between 1932 to 1953 although there were 3years stoppage of the league because of the Spanish civil war.

6. Arsenal(18 year drought twice and 16year drought till date).






Arsenal football club can lay claim to being the only football club to have gone an entire Premier league season unbeaten. The 2003/2004 team are often referred to as the "Invisibles". That team went on a 49games unbeaten run in the league spanning almost a season and half, a feat no English club have been able to replicate. However, since that league triumph, they have been on a 16year league drought (2004 till date). Before this recent drought, they experienced 18year droughts on two ocassions. The first between 1953 - 1971 and the other between 1971- 1989.

7. Juventus(21years Drought).






Domestically, Juventus are the most successful club in Italy. They are record holders of 35 league titles(officially), 13 Coppa Italia and 8 Supercoppa Italiana. Unofficially, they have won 37 league titles as the club vehemently refused to acknowledge the stripping of their 2005 and 2006 league titles for their involvement in a football scandal. Their 21year league drought started in 1905 and ended in 1926.

8. Inter Milan ( 17years Drought).






Inter Milan benefited from the stripping of the league title from Juve in 2006 because they ended that season closest to Juve on the league table which coincidentally ended their league drought. Their drought of 17years was between 1989-2006

9. Ac Milan (44years Drought).






Ac Milan are Italy's most successful club in the history of the Champions League. However alongside Man city on this list, they had a 44year league drought which they experienced between 1907 to 1951.

10. Bayern Munich (37 years drought).






Bayern have won a record 8th consecutive league titles and 30 overall. However, things were not always rossy. Between 1932 to 1969 Bayern were without a league title, that is a period of 37years.

11. Borrusia Dortmund (32 years Drought).






In recent times, dortmund has tasted some success. The biggest being the league title when they pipped Bayern Munich to it. There was a period of 32 years where they didn't win the league, between 1963 to 1995.

12. Psg (26 years Drought).






Psg dominates the French Ligue today as if it is a birth right but things weren't always like this. From the year it was founded in 1970, Psg waited for 26 before they could celebrate their first league title in 1986.
