Manchester City Announces New Team Captain Ahead of Their First Match

After the retirement of Mancity defender Vincent Kompany, who is now the coach for Belgian side Anderlecht, David Silva took over as the team captain for Manchester City. Silva was sometimes helped by Aguero, Fernandinho and De Bruyne in this role through last season.



David Silva left Manchester City this transfer window and signed for Spanish side Real Sociedad on a free transfer in August. This essentially rendered Mancity a captain-less team.

With their first match slated for tomorrow, 21 September 2020 against Wolverhampton, Mancity have chosen a new team leader. According to the Manchester Evening news, Fernandinho has been selected by his players and other backroom staff to be the team's captain.

The 35 year old Brazilian had been moved from his holding position in the midfield to help with defence in the last season due to injuries of City's defenders. After receiving a one year contract extension, Fernandinho is likely to start tomorrow's game as Aymeric Laporte is out with an injury.

As a senior player, Fernandinho is fitted for this position, although his high yellow card numbers will be a matter of concern for the team.
