Emiliano Martínez has been offered a new contract by Arsenal but that the parties remain some way apart. Negotiations are ongoing but Aston Villa are prepared to improve on Arsenal’s financial package while promising that he will begin as their first choice.

Arsenal recently received an enhanced offer this week. Martínez wants to stay at Arsenal but is aware that regular starts are a priority given that he turned 28 last week.

Arsenal could sell four players this summer in a bid to boost their hopes of landing Thomas Partey.

The Ghana international is a top target at the Emirates after Mikel Arteta made signing a defensive midfielder a priority.

Partey had a fabulous year with Atletico Madrid, who do not want to sell the 27-year-old.

His release clause stands at £45m, though, but after spending £27m on Gabriel Magalhaes - the Gunners are strapped for cash.

Houssem Aouar is another player on Arsenal's radar, with reports in France stating that Arteta is obsessed with the Lyon ace.

Lyon sporting director Juninho Pernambucano has revealed he held discussions with Alexandre Lacazette about returning to the French club.

But the arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang six months later has seen him play second fiddle to the Gabon star.

Lyon sporting director Juninho said Pep Guardiola "likes" Houssem Aouar amid links to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

Aouar has reportedly emerged as a target for Guardiola's Premier League giants City and Ligue 1 champions PSG following his exploits for Lyon.

The 22-year-old French midfielder – also linked to the likes of Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal – played a key role in Lyon's memorable run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2019-20.

Asked about Aouar's future and interest from PSG and City, Juninho told RMC Sport: "I think that has been happening directly with agents. We were not directly contacted. Maybe Vincent Ponsot [director general] was contacted by Manchester City, I am not sure.

"It is like that with these two teams, two enormous teams who play to win the Champions League every year, they have the capacity for that and that makes any player dream. I don't know if Houssem is ready to change project for a big Ligue 1 team like PSG.

"For City, of course Guardiola likes the player, but is that the profile that they are looking for today? We don't know that either and we have not received any official offers."

Newcastle complete signing of defender Jamal Lewis from Norwich

Lewis, 22, has agreed a five-year contract with Newcastle after the two clubs agreed a fee, reported to be around £15million, which could rise to £20m with add-ons.

Newcastle said on their official website: “Highly-rated full-back Jamal Lewis has become Newcastle United’s fifth signing of the summer after joining the Magpies from Norwich City.

“The Northern Ireland international has signed a five-year contract at St. James’ Park after earning rave reviews for his performances last season despite the Canaries’ relegation from the Premier League.”

Lewis, who started out at hometown club Luton before joining Norwich’s academy in 2014, was a regular starter for Norwich in the Premier League last season.

He made a total of 34 appearances in all competitions as Daniel Farke’s side were relegated after one season in the top flight.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce added: “Jamal is a very exciting prospect. I watched him flourish in the Championship two years ago and he made a real fist of it in the Premier League last season.”

Newcastle signed England striker Callum Wilson and Scotland winger Ryan Fraser, both from Bournemouth, on Monday.
