The tragic reason why Van Dijk decided to have "Virgil" printed on his jersey

Van Dijk doesn’t have his Surname printed on his Jersey, he prefers to have Virgil. Unfortunately, there’s a sad backstory.





Van Dijk was abandoned like Memphis Depay. His father abandoned Van Dijk’s mother and left behind 3 children. Virgil has refused to be associated with his father ever since.

This abandoning make his rise even more impressive and his uncle is extremely proud of him. Virgil might have been a child, but this experience was traumatizing.





On top of leaving, Ron van Dijk didn’t stay in touch. Steven Fo Sieeuw said: “Ron is a nice guy but that’s not enough to be a good father. You have to be there for your children. Ron remarried and his new wife was very domineering so he didn’t see his kids much.”




Happily, Virgil’s mother turned into a heroine. His uncle, Steven Fo Sieeuw also said: “I can confirm: his mom is his biggest idol. She had a full-time job and three kids to look after, so she never had a minute for herself. She spent every day going to then coming home and looking after the kids and doing all the cooking.”





Virgil might have been able to forgive his father but his behavior deeply affected the family. Hellen Fo Sieeuw accused Ron of returning for money. His father, Ron Van Dijk later responded: ”I am the only person who knows what has made Virgil the man he is today. No one on his mother’s side ever bothered with Virgil and his football until he became a professional.”

Whatever he claims, Virgil has turned his back on him. This violent episode ultimately forged Virgil and today, he’s one of the best player in the world. He is Iron-willed, monstrously fast and have the perfect mindset.
